Is Botox Dangerous or Safe?

I don’t know exactly why I’m being compelled to write this post, “Is Botox Dangerous or Safe?”  But my guess is that it will become more clear to me after it’s up and out there. Then again, maybe it won’t, but my hope is that someone will benefit from the thoughts I’m about to share.

A while back, I had the weirdest thing happen, I literally had a “pain in the butt.” If I didn’t know better, I’d say that was a crude thing to write, but it’s really true. I had this persistent, sharp pain that would not go away.

So I did some research on it and found there were options. The one I chose was a natural sugar water injection called “prolotherapy.” As I researched it, I decided that worst case it wouldn’t work, but at least there wouldn’t be any side effects as opposed to the other option, a steroid shot.

So I found a local naturopathic doctor who advertised it and went in and got a shot.  I felt a cold sensation which immediately seemed to wash away the pain, and I felt lightyears better. So yes, big huge kudos for the Prolotherapy, it was truly amazing and I’d get it again if I ever needed to.

But on the not-so bright side, when I was in that doctor’s office, I saw that Botox was offered on his menu of services. Of course, that came as a big surprise to me.

botox dangers

Is Botox Dangerous or Safe?

A big chunk of the celebrities I’ve done makeup on get botox injections basis, and I get asked often what my opinion is on the safety of botox all of the time. Let’s just say it’s not positive as I had a 26 year old nephew-in-law die after receiving botox injections for a migrane. If it wasn’t related, that’s a terribly young age for an otherwise very healthy young man to die. That, plus my feeling in general is that we should stay away from botox. So yeah, I was really confused as to why a naturopathic doctor would offer botox to anyone.

So as I got that prolotherapy shot in my behind, I asked that Naturopathic doctor why he would do botox injections on his clients. He shrugged and said, “Because they want it.”

Seriously?

I felt a little sick inside to hear him admit that. At least his answer was honest, and probably the same motivation behind every doctor that administers botox to their clients. But this guy should know better, he was a naturopathic doctor, right? Then again, he was a human being, wanting to make money and knew this was a sure way to get it.

So I asked, “Isn’t botox toxic?”

botox dangerous or safeHe said, “yeah, it’s called Bo “tox” for a reason. It’s the most poisonous bacterium known to man, if you were to eat it, you’d die.”

Really, do people even know or take time to look into that? It’s too dangerous to eat, but we can inject it into our bloodstreams without batting an eye? And doesn’t it seem like it would cause cumulative damage to the major organs that it’s delivered to as well?

So I went home and started tearing into every study I could find. I won’t preach my thoughts on this, but will share a few studies, and let you decide for yourself.

On the bright side…

In every post that we share, we believe there is always a positive and safe alternative, and we love to help you find it. We were amazed when we first realized the beauty benefits that come with dietary changes and with using natural and organic products on our skin. The key to anti-aging is anti-oxidants, which come in rich supply in the products and recipes we share all of the time. You see amazing results with the use of stem-cells, which can be derived from fresh fruits. So what happens when our diets are rich in phytonutrients? Our skin glows, wrinkles fill in and soften, the skin holds moisture better, the hair and nails grow and we feel better, it truly is a magical approach to beauty.

If you’re not drinking those nutrient dense smoothies, now is a great time to start! And we’ve got plenty of delicious recipes that we’re happy to share. Our belief is that we don’t need to freeze our faces with toxins, but instead, nourish our bodies, inside & out, and beautiful things start to happen.

Let us know your thoughts, we’d love to hear!!

Beautiful Skin, Naturally

Beautiful Skin NATURALLY

Probably one of the biggest requests we get is from viewers wanting to know what they can do to get beautiful skin naturally.

Since veryone is different, there isn’t one canned answer we can share. We have a lot going on in our lives and it ultimately shows on the face.

But one thing we will say is  we LOVE Argan Oil. And once you know what it does for the skin, there’s not a lot not to love. It appears to be amazing inside and out and fights beautifully against inflammation, helps with SPF, wrinkles, stretch-marks, is anti-bacterial, and fights arthritis, acne, and other inflammatory conditions.

It’s been shown to be anti-aging to the skin, hair, nails and is loaded with healthy fats and vitamin E, which also aid in wound healing.

SO, all that said, today I was shopping and saw a night cream called “Argan Oil”…yes, my heart skipped a beat!

Of course the first thing I did was grab it off the shelf and search for the ingredients.  They weren’t the easiest thing to find, and that’s usually the first sign of trouble…so once I found them, my fears were validated. Yuck and yikes!

This is what we call “greenwashing,” where we are led to think we’re buying something pure and natural, but when we look into it, we learn it’s about as un-natural (and potentially dangerous) as it can possibly be.Yeah, grrrrrr on that.Unfortunately greenwashing happens all the time, in our products and in our foods.

Anyway, I saw all kinds of ingredients that we have huge concerns against, including DMDM Hydantoin, all kinds of parabens, high score of PEG’s, EDTA, Soja sterols, propylene glycol, mineral oil and ugh petroleum based & synthetic ingredients galore.  In fact, I’m still having a hard time finding the “argan oil”–can anyone help me here?

So I posted this picture on Instagram and other social sites.  A lot of people were shocked–yay, that will make them think before buying in the future :), but we had an overwhelming response and many requests for a post on our favorite items with argan oil.  So, this one’s for each of you…

Btw we have a wonderful database with thousands of ingredients we have concern over…if you haven’t seen it yet, head over to our CHEMICAL SEARCH.  Put your ingredient in the search and if it comes up, it will tell you what we think of it and why, if it doesn’t come up, you’re probably in luck because we don’t think it’s terrible.

Or if you want to be educated and entertained, head to our NaturesKnockout YouTube channel.

You’ll see I-SPY videos, where we have quick, quirky videos to help you learn some of the red flag ingredients like some of the ones I listed above. It’s a little random and funny, but those were our very first videos we ever did. We were so excited to help the world become of aware of what’s lurking in our products. So those videos are a little dusty and shot with a poor camera that was sitting on top of a stack of VHS tapes (did I just say VHS – wow. That’s nuts!) But we think you’ll like the content we shared.

Simple DIY Tricks for Restoring Jewelry

We’re all about repurposed and recycled jewelry, and why wouldn’t we be? But what if it stinks like that old attic smell? In this post, we’ve got some simple DIY tricks for renewing that old jewelry, and even getting rid of that stink–yay! 🙂

This post came about because the other day I was at a Boutique and ran across a booth full of old jewelry. I must have had the “look” because the girl at the booth announced that every piece was just $3. Immediately I had to touch it, and as I felt the metals and jewels, I knew they were worth much more than the price she had set.

She continued, “We bought a storage unit at an action and it was loaded with all of this jewelry.” I was intrigued, “so I’m just selling it to get rid of it.”

Wow. Some people get all the luck, lol.

But I’m happy for her and also happy for me, because that $3 price went a very long way! As I draped 17 pieces of very cool jewelry onto one arm, I started to smell that old stinky metal smell. If I didn’t know it was an easy fix, I may have set down every one of those pieces and move on. But luckily I knew, and that’s when I realized I needed to share what I knew with you.

I went home and here is what I did:

Mix the following together:

INGREDIENTS

INSTRUCTIONS

Pour ingredients into a pitcher and stir.

  1. Place jewelry into a glass bowl or metal pan, then pour the mixture over the jewelry, making sure to saturate each peice.
  2. Allow to sit overnight or at least 12 hours.
  3. Remove from the liquid mixture and place jewelry pieces onto a dry towel.
  4. Allow to dry completely.
  5. Enjoy your fresh new jewelry!

Viola!! That’s all there is to it. I wish I would’ve taken a before and after because it was much more sparkly and bright after the cleaning. But had you seen it before, it was pretty dingy and dull, but luckily I could see a glimmer of hope.

So that’s all there is to it.

Many of the pieces I’ve done this with have been costume jewelry, and I haven’t had any problems with it at all. If you have something you’re afraid could get ruined, do some research before taking the plunge. But from my experience it has brought new life back to something old and forgotten, and that’s been really fun!

Let us know how it works for you! Comment below, we love hearing from you!

Dry hair and scalp? Natural Remedies that work!

Q&A – Dry hair and scalp? Natural Remedies that work!

QUESTION: My daughter and I have severe dry scalp. We have been to the dermatologist with no results. We have been using DermOrganics Shampoo and Masque. Added Flax seed and Omega oil to our diet. We have even used Teatree and Olive oil as a treatment directly on our scalps. Our hair is healthier and looks great however we are still suffering from dry and flaky scalp and I mean dry, itchy and irritated to the point of sores. Any other suggestions? My daughter is 12 and going to Middle school this year and would love to get some relief for her that wont pump her growing body full of chemicals…
P.S. We love logging in and following Natures Knockout. Thank You!

ANSWER:  Thanks so much, and it sounds like you’re doing a lot of things right.  We may be able to give you a few more suggestions, but if there is a medical condition, you may need to see another doctor for another opinion.

That said, here are our thoughts..

The scalp needs moisture, and we feel there are a couple of different ways to approach that, through the body and through direct application to the scalp.

Hydrating from the inside-out  🙂

Dry hair and scalp? Here are some Natural Remedies that work!

Chances are the entire body would benefit from more moisture.   The first thing everyone will recommend is drinking more water.  We agree, but also feel that water itself can be drying, so in order to get the most benefit, we add the healthy fats to our diet every time we eat (avocados, extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil, flaxseed oil)…  but that’s still not enough.  We also make sure that the bulk of our diet includes lots of organic fruits and vegetables.  They will help tremendously to hydrate the body internally as well.

Are you dehydrating your body? 🙁

Natural remedies for dry hair and scalp

Another thing some people over look are the things that they may be doing to dehydrate the body….caffeine, alcohol, and chemicals are big offenders.  They have been shown to dehydrate everything, including the brain and should be eliminated from the diet as soon as possible.  While you’re at it, eliminating chemicals from the diet in general can help a great deal in nutrient and moisture absorption.

Since water is dehydrating, avoid swimming, unless using a swim cap (not cute, we know, but…we’re talking about how to avoid dehydrating the body, right? 🙂

Also washing the hair too often can be a culprit in dehydration, so try skipping an extra day or two and see if that makes a difference.

Also, environmental factors can play a huge roll in the health of the scalp and hair.  If you live in a dry climate, it’s important to protect yourself from the elements as much as possible.  Wearing hats with a sunscreen protection is very helpful.  I wear hats every time I know I’ll be out in the sun and there are some pretty cute ones out there (yay!)  But it seriously can make a difference.

If you’re in a dry climate, adding a humidifier to your home or bedroom can help a greta deal too.

Another thing–is your water hard?  You’d be surprised what a difference a water softener can add to helping maintain the moisture in the hair.

Here’s an excellent tip that Leah Nyenhuis wrote when I posted this on our facebook page,  “I just put a water filter attachment to my shower head and have noticed significant improvement to my itchy scalp!”

And of course, lay off on heat to the scalp and hair, especially blow drying 🙁  Yeah, bummer, but it’s true and will make a big difference.  If you need to blow dry the hair on occasion, make sure to not direct heat onto the scalp.  Also use a safe heat protectant prior to applying any heat.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Extra Virgin Olive oil is a wonderful conditioner for the hair and body–from the inside and outside.  Make sure it’s a part of your diet every day.  For the hair specifically, it conditions it and adds shine, and we’ll share some tips on how to apply it topically as well for amazing hydration, shine, and conditioning.

Hydrating from the outside-in 🙂

Natural remedies for dry hair and scalp

Massage extra virgin olive oil into your scalp and hair and cover with a shower cap (the monounsaturated fatty acids will help protect the hair and scalp, making hair more shiny, while nourishing hair and scalp at the same time) leave it in for up to a couple of hours and then wash with a safe shampoo (of course!)   Psssst, while we’re here, check out our  I-spy and chemical spy sections of our website to help understand why this is so important.  But in a nutshell, make sure your shampoo has no sulphates, or fragrances, which are especially drying.

Other highly effective conditioners that could be added to the above olive oil treatment:

ONE MORE TIP

After conditioning, rinsing and towel drying hair, you can spritz pure aloe vera juice (no sugar of course 🙂  onto the scalp as a leave on conditioner.  It can be purchased at a health food store and poured into a spritz container.

OOPS, I LIED–I GUESS THERE IS ONE MORE TIP I HAVE TO SHARE!

OKAY, I will make this one quick, I promise, but this is really important.  Since your scalp is causing you so much frustration, this is super important.  We talked about not washing it as much, but the other thing is to remember the importance of protecting the scalp from the drying effects of water.  So each time you immerse it in water, make sure to coat it with a protective oil (like I mentioned above) before applying any water.  This will act as a barrier and help protect the delicate skin.

My Perfect Imperfections

My Perfect Imperfections & Why We Started Nature’s Knockout

by tcorrea

We all have things about ourselves that aren’t so perfect, so when I got this tag that was started on youtube by Andrea’s choice, I felt inspired.  It was actually one of my most difficult imperfections that was why we started Nature’s Knockout!  I’ll explain more in this video.
One of our favorite quotes is by Sandra Bullock…”it’s you’re imperfections that make you beautiful.”  LOVE IT!!

Of course at first, it’s so easy to see our own imperfections, so that’s where I started and almost didn’t end!  But the response from you was wonderful, and all in all, I’m grateful for the perfections and imperfections that make me the person I am.
