if you want to lose weight, one of the best things you can do is to boost your metabolism, it can make all the difference in the world.

Here’s why:

Your body’s metabolism controls how fast and efficiently the calories you eat are burned. Increasing your metabolism, even just a little, can help you burn calories even at rest.

Here are the food & ingredient super stars that can boost your metabolism:

  1. Add catechins. Hmph, what are THOSE? They are ingredients that will fire up your metabolism quickly. Catechins are helpful molecules that have been shown to aid in body fat reduction and metabolism increases. The best sources of catechins are Green tea (warm, not hot or cold) Black tea (but not quite as many as found in green tea), blackberries AND dark chocolate. It also contains some caffeine, which has thermogenic properties-which helps increase the heat inside your body’s metabolic systems, making it easier to ignite more calories. While it’s not a good idea to go wild with candy bars for this small boost, you may want to use a small piece of dark chocolate for a dessert instead of something else.
  2. Fiber – Adding fiber to your diet is another way you can get your metabolism back on track. Fiber helps speed up the digestion process, which may give your calorie burning a little more oomph. You can get your daily fiber intake from adding sorghum, quinoa, flax, and barley. Here’s a super yummy one you may want to do–here’s one you’ll love, try making some sorghum flour based cookies with Just Cookie Dough from hamptoncreek. Mmmm.
  3. Water. We all know this, but it really is important to constantly drink water throughout your day. Cold water especially has been linked to a slight increase in your body’s ability to burn extra calories. Essentially, your body needs to work to regulate the temperature of the water so that it matches your body’s core temperature. If you drink plenty of water throughout the day, and especially right before meals, this can help shave off a few more calories.
  4. Calcium – Some studies have found evidence showing that people who aren’t getting enough calcium in their diet have slower metabolisms. That’s why it’s important to make sure you’re getting enough of this essential nutrient. Try more green leafy vegetables, including spring greens, cabbage, swede, rocket, watercress, kale, broccoli and parsley.
  5. Vitamin D – for another small boost in your calorie burning, try foods that are rich in vitamin D. One natural sources of Vitamin D are fatty fish (like tuna, mackerel, and wild salmon–which we favor the most as it is so rich in Omega 3 fatty acids as well ). Other great natural sources of Vit D include orange juice, and organic beef liver and organic egg yolks.  Vitamin D helps keep your muscles strong and healthy, which is a key factor in burning calories more efficiently. It has also been shown to help keep your immune system at its peak, which may prevent or reduce your frequency of getting sick, and has even been shown to be effective in fighting depression.
  6. Grilled Organic Chicken – Eating plenty of protein has also been shown to help keep your metabolism working at its best. Protein is able to fuel your muscle fibers and contributes to the amount of lean mass you have. With more lean mass as part of your body’s composition, you are able to maximize your calorie burning. Protein sources like skinless grilled chicken breast are a great way to feel satisfied without adding too many calories to your plate.
  7. Spinach – it’s also important to make sure you get enough iron in your diet in order to help your muscles be more efficient. Iron contributes to the delivery of oxygen to your muscles. This process is essential if you want to burn fat when you’re cutting back on your calories. One of the tastiest sources of iron is spinach. A mixed salad that swaps spinach for lettuce can be an easy way to add this nutrient to your plate.

DIY Wassail – Easy, Delicious & Anti-Inflammatory Beauty Drink

DIY Wassail Recipe, no refined sugar, dairy, gluten, grain, soy, chemicals or guilt AND your skin will love you for it too!

 

Wassail is so yummy! It feels and smells like Christmas and just makes me want to snuggle up in a big fleece blanket by the sparkles and crackles of a glowing fireplace.

But I was a little curious about the origin and did some reading. So for those of you that are a little snoopy like me, I’ll share what I learned. Wassail comes from an old English tradition that came about as a way to cheer in a good apple crop in the coming year.

If you want to know more, I found my info through Wikipedia, but in a nutshell that’s how it started. But sharing a warm cup of Wassail has spread to become a really tasty Christmas tradition worldwide. But the only problem with traditional wassail is that it’s not so healthy. It starts out that way, but you cook down the apples, depleting them of nutrients and then add lots of sugar and chemicals if it’s pre-packaged.

DIY Wassail Recipe – Warm, Delicious, Anti-inflammatory

  • 1 3/4 fresh unfiltered organic apple juice
  • 1 cup fresh orange juice
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1/2 cup raw honey
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ginger or 1/4″ piece of fresh ginger root
  • 1/2 teaspoon whole cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

Place all ingredients in a high-powered blender. If you have a Hot Soup Setting, press it, or if not, blend for 90 seconds at high speed until warm.

Serve right away.

Vegan Pumpkin Milkshake

It’s time for a Vegan Pumpkin Milkshake

Today I went hiking in the mountains behind our house. Can I just say that I love the Fall? The leaves in this picture are from my little hike, so vibrant and beautiful. Oops, before I get side tracked, no, I didn’t put leaves in my smoothie, lol! But I thought they would be perfect in a photo.

So when I came home to a pumpkin waiting for me to think up a wonderful way to use it, my heart practically skipped a beat. YES, a Pumpkin Milkshake, YAY! 🙂

Vegan Pumpkin Milkshake

Vegan Pumpkin Milkshake

  • 1 cup coconut or almond milk
  • 1/2 frozen banana
  • 1/2 orange, peeled
  • 1 cup chopped pumpkin with skin (or 1/2 cup pumpkin puree
  • 1-2 teaspoons pure maple syrup, black strap molasses, or 10 drops liquid stevia
  • 1 scoop Raw Whole Food Vanilla Protein Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Raw Organic Green Superfood Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Macro Life Naturals Macro Greens Superfood Powder
  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil (or coconut oil)
  • 1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
  • 2 handfuls ice

Blend well and serve. This smoothie constitutes as a complete meal.

Oh gosh, this flavor takes me way back. I remember the first Orange Julius I ever had. I was in 7th grade and went to a new mall with my friends. One wet frothy taste and I was in love! So here’s a quick Orange Julius Knock off recipe that we’re sure you’re going to LOVE!

ORANGE JULIUS KNOCKOFF

INGREDIENTS

1 1/2 cups organic coconut or organic almond milk
1 full orange, or 2 cuties, peeled (the juicier the oranges the better)
1 tsp. organic apple cider vinegar
1 teaspoon Greens superfood
1/2 scoop Raw Organic Vanilla Protein Powder
1 tablespoon organic extra virgin olive oil
1/2 banana
1 teaspoon organic flax seeds
2 tablespoons raw honey, organic maple syrup, or pure stevia powder
8 cubes ice

DIRECTIONS

Place all ingredients in a blender and blend 1-2 minutes until smooth and creamy. I usually like to start my day by adding the probiotic and fiber. But if you’ve had them already in your day, you can leave them out.

A little note on the stevia–we recommend avoiding all stevia that is white or trademarked, as it is not natural. The one we’ve linked to above is one that we believe to be pure, and not processed.

This smoothie recipe constitutes 1 complete meal replacement–woohoo!! 🙂

We love this Cinnamon tea, it’s super simple to make and tastes super yummy! In other words…Cinnamon Tea, BEAUTY inside & out! Not only is it soothing, but Cinnamon tea is anti-inflammatory and anti-aging.  Whenever anyone in the family has aches and pains, I’ll offer them cinnamon tea and they love how it relaxes them, but also seems to make them feel better. Here are some reasons I think Cinnamon tea works: Cinnamon itself has been shown to have positive effects on reducing inflammation, cancer, and even diabetes.  It also has been found to be a great source of manganese, fiber, iron, and calcium.  

Heads up: Cinnamon may be a blood thinner, so ask a doctor before use, especially if you take any sort of blood thinners.

AND HOW SAFE IS STEVIA??? Stevia is an herb that has been thought to be helpful in fighting high blood pressure and improving insulin, which may be beneficial for diabetics.  It is also full of anti-oxidants, which we love! We look for stevia that isn’t branded with a trademark of any kind…we could write a book about why, but for the best, safest results, go for raw organic stevia. Stevia has recently been given a bad rap, with controversy over it being an endocrine disruptor, which can disrupt the hormonal balance and could possibly be a health concern. We feel that the stevia plant itself is incredible, rich in antioxidants, and it’s leaves even contain an ingredient that can help in reversing cancer, rather than causing it. WE BELIEVE that the problem with stevia is if it has been altered in anyway. We grow our own, right inside our kitchens, and highly recommend it. If you choose to buy it, we’d say to make sure it’s pure organic green stevia powder or pure stevia extract. With Cinco de Mayo upon us again, we couldn’t help but share a delicious way to celebrate. We also happen to love horchatas, so this may be a little bit of a selfish pleasure–but we think you’ll love this delicious cooler with a perfect south of the border flavor as well.

Alrighty, here we go…

HORCHATA RECIPE

Ingredients

1 cup organic brown rice, raw
5 cups water ( filtered ) 
3/4 cup pure coconut milk 
2 teaspoons pure organic vanilla extract
1 tablespoon ground organic cinnamon 
1 teaspoon raw organic stevia leaf powder, or 1/2 cup raw honey ) 

 

Directions

1. Place rice and water in blender and mix 1 full minute. Let set 4 hours.
2. Strain the rice, using a nut milk bag , squeezing out all of the extra water into a pitcher.
3. Pour the rice milk in the pitcher back into the blender and add all of the remaining ingredients.
4. Mix well and serve over ice.

We hear it all the time…so many people are getting away from dairy and switching over to almond milk.  Just like us, they start the transition by heading to the grocery store and buying pre-made boxes of almond milk.

That seemed all good and fine to us, until one day I became curious….just what was in that almond milk I was buying??  So I did it…I read the label!  That was probably one thing the manufacturer was hoping I wouldn’t do because it was full of all kinds of ingredients I didn’t recognize or even know how to pronounce.  After years of research into cosmetic ingredients, one simple little thing that I learned carried through, which was, if it didn’t list simple food items, my hunch was that it probably was full of synthetic chemicals.  Even some of the vitamins they added to make me feel like I was being a smart shopper, were chemically based.

So hmmmm, that’s when I started thinking it was time to do a little more than just picking up a box of almond milk on the store shelves.  It was time to see if I could figure out a way to make this stuff myself.  And what I was about to learn was going to be lifechanging!  Making your own almond milk just takes a few minutes, and it saves a TON of money and is pretty dang empowering.  Now it’s your turn, just give it a try and let us know how you love it!!

  • Yield: 1 quart
  • cook time: zero 🙂 Don’t you love raw cooking! 

INGREDIENTS

raw almonds – 1 cup
filtered water – 4 cups
stevia powder – a pinch – optional
pure vanilla extract – 1/2 teaspoon – optional

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Place almonds and water together in a high powered blender. Mix well.  Sift with through a Nut Milk Bag (TIP: or a garbonza bag works great too!)
  2. If you use liquid stevia to sweeten the milk, start with just a few drops and add more if desired…it won’t take much at all!

You can also dehydrate the pulp and use to cook with or blend up the dried pulp to make flour–did I just say make your own flour?????  YES!  And it works as a perfect replacement to any other gluten free flour (and provides a great source of protein too!)
