Natural Hairspray Faves!

Q&A

Question: Ladies, what hairspray do you use?

From Stacy on our FB page (thank YOU Stacy!)

Our Answer:

Hi Stacy, thanks for asking and we have some definite current natural hairspray faves! Here they are, and why: We’d love to share some organic items, but currently, our favorite natural & safe hairsprays tend to fall into the categories of “natural” or “safe”   We’ll share them below, and share why we are liking them as well. And to make it easy on you, we’ll even link to them where we’ve found them for the best deals too!  Here goes…. Our Favorite Natural & Safe Hairsprays!

1.  Andalou Naturals, Sunflower & Citrus Hairspray – This hairspray contains more natural ingredients and none of the questionable or “dangerous” ingredients that we would worry or warn about.  As for performance, this one was outstanding, both in humid and dry climates and the hold was very strong.  We really loved this one the most and give it 3 stars out of 3 for being safe, having nourishing ingredients, and for performance.  On top of all that, the price was great too!

favorite natural hairsprays2. BWC – Beauty Without Cruelty Hair Spray– This line is based on no animal testing, but also has the most questionable ingredients, however the worst of them falls between mild to low levels of toxicity. They tend to use more synthetic ingredients, which we aren’t fans of, but they are the lesser of the evil ingredients and not dangerous enough (in our opinion) to be listed in our list of dangerous ingredients.  That said, we love the performance of this hairspray in both dry and humid climates. It has a good, strong hold.  We give rate this product 2 out of 3 stars, because it has “safe” ingredients, excellent performance, but isn’t as organic as we’d like.

3.  Giovanni Hairspray – For a light hold and the lightest scent we found.  This may not be enough of a hold for some people and in more humid climates, but don’t give up there, because we’ve found it to be great when used as a thermal protectant for thermal styling.  We rate it 2 out of 3 stars, because it’s great, and has good performance as a hairspray, but not amazing performance. We love that it has such a light scent, we love it for our set bags because it tends to run in slender, slightly smaller containers, which is nice for travel, when you’re limited that way. It would also fall between “safe” and “natural” in the ingredients list. So there you have it–until next time, these are our top 3 current Our Favorite Natural & Safe Hairsprays. Because formulations change, stay tuned until the next time!

Why doesn’t my shampoo work anymore?  + TIPS by Hair Stylists and how to get beautiful, flowing hair!

We recently had a tweet from one of our followers, Sara, who felt like her hair had become too used to the shampoo she was using.  She asked for our recommendations for a different option. Of course, we have something to say about that.

NATURAL PRODUCTS ARE A MUST – Just like Sara, you may have initially loved the switch over to natural, organic, or safe products– but what happens after your hair starts to get used to that wonderfully “clean” product (which has been stripped of sulphates, preservatives, and what we believe to be toxic fillers) and NOW the good stuff doesn’t seem to be working either? Keep reading…

1. MOISTURIZING THE HAIR – we currently like Giovanni Shampoo, which does a great job, moisturizing the hair.

SIDE NOTE: You may have noticed we’ve omitted DermOrganics Morrocan Oil from our post. We did love their shampoo and conditioner, but were under the understanding that the fragrance in their products was “safe”. Upon recent attempts to contact them, asking about how safe the Parfum/fragrance is, they have not responded. Uh oh–so for now we would take caution and turn to better, safe options. It also won’t hurt for you to start pestering them too–we’ve found that company’s respond when enough pressure is applied.

The problem with using just one shampoo and conditioner, no matter what you use, is that it only fills one purpose.  Hair is mostly made up of protein, but will always need adequate moisture added to it.  We recommend using a good moisturizing shampoo and conditioner often, and feel that these ones definitely are great options.

Another way to add moisture to the hair is through DEEP CONDITIONING. I will often take a good moisturizing conditioner, and apply it to dry hair, then lock it in, by adding a healthy oil, such as extra virgin olive oil, almond, jojoba oil, or even coconut oil. Just slather it on, and leave it in the hair for 15 minutes. Then shampoo it out in the shower.  Some people will love the results so much that they will do this every time they shampoo, but are soon disappointed with the heaviness of the hair. So I would only recommend this treatment, once a week to once a month, depending upon your hair.

2. CLEAN THE HAIR – with continual use of a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner, a good cleaning and gentle stripping shampoo becomes important, in order to remove excess buildup and oils that begin to build up and weigh down the hair.  Andalou Healthy Shine Shampoo works great to provide that cleansing that is needed at least once a week to keep the hair from becoming too heavy and weighted and to bring back the shine. If hair is more oily, it may be needed more often or could even be altered with every other washing.

3. USE A WATER FILTER IN YOUR SHOWER. You may not have even thought of this one, but believe it or not, this is a must for softer, bouncier, healthier hair and improved skin too! We recently received this  Jonathan Shower Purification System from the manufacturer and weren’t sure what to think. I honestly thought it looked a little cheap, but handed it to my hubby and he installed it in less than 5 minutes.

Still hesitant, I stepped into the shower, but have to admit, I really love it!  The head releases the perfect rainfall of water, which I really liked, but the after effects were even more impressive.  I would especially recommend it if your hair has lost it’s shine, or seems limp, brittle, or lifeless, or for those suffering with skin irritations of any kind. It reduces harmful toxins, while enhancing the hair and skin’s pH balance. It has been shown to reduce chlorine by 91%! We just redid 2 bathrooms in our house and replaced sink faucets that cost more than the retail cost of this shower head.. but the difference this can make is unbelievable!

Baking soda and vinegar for hair

ARE VINEGAR AND BAKING SODA A GOOD FOR THE HAIR?

This is a question we get asked about often. We’d actually love to stamp a big huge WARNING sign on this thought. We believe it to be one of those “internet wivestales” that you may have seen on a site or two, stating those are good for your hair.  We strongly disagree, and feel that they can be too stripping and could cause damage to the hair, especially when used repeatedly or often.  The hair needs to stay within a safe pH balance and these items are too acidic and/or alkaline and actually take the hair to the extreme ends of the pH scale, which can be extremely damaging and can promote brittleness and breakage, by literally blowing out the cuticle of the hair. They also do nothing to nurture the hair and provide no moisture, nor protein, which is what makes the hair thrive. So put those items down, and stick with natural and safe products, formulated to clean, strengthen, and moisturize the hair without harming it at all.   IMAGE

4. ADD PROTEIN TO THE HAIR:  Moisture alone, isn’t enough for hair to be at it’s most optimal, healthy state.  It also needs protein.  Because hair is naturally protein rich, a good protein conditioner is essential and should be used once a week, for most people.

Giovanni has a nice Protein Reconditioning Treatment that we really like a lot.  Too much protein  can be problematic for the hair, so remember that a little goes a long way and not to apply deep packs of protein longer than 15 minutes. But properly applied, hair will respond immediately and well to added protein.

5. AIR DRY AND MINIMIZE HEAT  The hair will always improve when we can protect it by reducing the amount of heat we apply to it.  Whenever possible, give it a break and let it air dry. We also have a great video that shows a simple way to get beautiful waves without any heat.  Enjoy!

Natural Ways to Lighten Hair Safely!

If you love lightening your hair….for the most natural look, it should just be lightened above the occipital bone. We’ve seen all kinds of ombre hair trends that are doing the opposite, but just be aware that any kind of lightening, especially on the ends will always compromise the health of the hair. That said, we know it’s cute and hip, and have a feeling you’ll want to do it anyway, so we’ll offer some natural ways to damage the hair, lol. Also, make sure to heat protect and recondition the hair to help give it as much of a boost as possible.

With that, we will share some Natural Ways to Lighten Hair that you can do all by yourself…

Here goes:

Natural Ways to Lighten Hair

The sun will naturally lighten the hair, but is very aging to the skin.  Solution, spend time in the sun, but be sure to have good safe sun protection for the skin.  I know your next question, so here are some Sunscreens we currently love: #1-cream  #2-spray  #3-cream

Tips for the best results in the sun:

The hair will lighten more evenly if it is damp when exposed to the sun.

Chamomile Herbal Tea

I’ve used to use Chamomile Tea to lighten my hair.  I just steeped it and then put it on my hair before I wet it in the shower, then cleaned all the rest of the goods and then got back to the hair so it gave it a little time to soak in.  Then I washed, conditioned, and towel blotted my hair and gave it one final rinse with the tea.  My hair did lighten but it needed more moisture added back in.  So a good moisture pack or moisturizing conditioner would be helpful.

Other ways to use chamomile would be a good shampoo and conditioner with chamomile in them.  These are some really nice options that are alos fragrance free.

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice can be a great lightener for the hair, especially when mixed with sunshine.  The best way to get the best lightening effects with it is to place pure lemon juice in a little spritz bottle, spray it on dry hair and spend some time outside.  This is also drying for the hair, so make sure to do some deep moisturizing treatments, use one of our good DIY moisturizing treatments we’ve posted, or a good moisturizing conditioner to restore the hair to a healthy balance.

Swimming

If you’re lucky enough to live by a beach, get in the water right away and let it air dry in the sun.  The natural salt in the water will also help the hair lighten quicker and air drying it without combing it first will give really pretty natural highlights.  Again, I’m feeling like a broken record-ugh, but make sure to moisturize the hair well.

Spending time at the swimming pool can also lighten the hair, but this would be a last choice option, because of the chlorine -grrrr.  🙂  If you go to the pool, make sure to shower first and completely saturate the hair with fresh water prior to sucking that chlorine into the hair.  Then as soon as you get out of the pool, head to the shower–even if you want to sunbathe–just get that chlorine out of the hair as quickly as you can.  There’s a ton more I could say about that, and maybe I will (in another post)

You may find other natural options for lightening the hair naturally, but these are our top recommendations.

Let us know your thoughts, ideas, what you’re eating for dinner tonight–did I just say that?  lol, we just love hearing from you always! In the mean time, we hope you enjoyed learning some Natural Ways to Lighten Hair safely!

Coconut oil, a billion uses!

We LOVE coconut oil! It not only adds a yummy scent as we’re cooking with it, but it also makes an awesome replacement for butter or margarin and is classified as a healthy fat. But beyond that, it’s great for the skin, inside and out.

We’ve talked about it for years, it’s saturated fat, but is completely natural, so our bodies know what to do with it, unlike some of it’s synthetic and GMO counterparts. So our feeling is that it’s a fat worth it’s weight in gold. We’ve heard many testimonials from so many people, including some of you and we are big believers. I keep a jar in my kitchen for cooking, and a jar in my bathroom for beauty uses. Sometimes I even swish it around in my mouth to act as a cleaning agent and protectant for the gums and teeth.

When Tiff’s little guys, Ashton had a toothache, she gave him some to swish around in his mouth (aka oil pulling) and his pain went right away. He was a happy little guy and we thought that was pretty neat.

We’ve shared tons of ways you can use coconut oil, and here’s a really great video where we shared some of those. It’s not great because of what we did, but because of what you added. We asked for your input and ideas on why you like this amazing healthy fat and you generously offered your wonderful ideas and enthusiasm as well. Coconut oil, a billion uses!
