What if you want to lose weight, but CAN’T?

It may be as simple as learning your body’s needs, and a new perspective. Some people try starving themselves, resistance, punishing themselves, or fad diets, yet all have the same results–failure. So if you’re starting to think you just can’t lose weight, maybe it’s not your body that’s the problem at all, and the fix might even be very simple.

You’ve heard it from us before, what you put IN your body, ON your body, and IN your mind can make or break you. When you look at your body through a new lens, not as the “enemy” but as an incredible divine creation that cares for you constantly, with every single breath, it’s easier to see your body as your valued friend. When we see our body through appreciation and gratitude, we naturally want to care for it, rather than to punish it, and that emotional transition can be essential in helping us to truly “care” for our body in a whole new way.

As for what we put IN our bodies, did you know that:

if you want to lose weight, one of the best things you can do is to boost your metabolism, it can make all the difference in the world.

Here’s why:

Your body’s metabolism controls how fast and efficiently the calories you eat are burned. Increasing your metabolism, even just a little, can help you burn calories even at rest.

Here are the food & ingredient super stars that can boost your metabolism:

  1. Add catechins. Hmph, what are THOSE? They are ingredients that will fire up your metabolism quickly. Catechins are helpful molecules that have been shown to aid in body fat reduction and metabolism increases. The best sources of catechins are Green tea (warm, not hot or cold) Black tea (but not quite as many as found in green tea), blackberries AND dark chocolate. It also contains some caffeine, which has thermogenic properties-which helps increase the heat inside your body’s metabolic systems, making it easier to ignite more calories. While it’s not a good idea to go wild with candy bars for this small boost, you may want to use a small piece of dark chocolate for a dessert instead of something else.
  2. Fiber – Adding fiber to your diet is another way you can get your metabolism back on track. Fiber helps speed up the digestion process, which may give your calorie burning a little more oomph. You can get your daily fiber intake from adding sorghum, quinoa, flax, and barley. Here’s a super yummy one you may want to do–here’s one you’ll love, try making some sorghum flour based cookies with Just Cookie Dough from hamptoncreek. Mmmm.
  3. Water. We all know this, but it really is important to constantly drink water throughout your day. Cold water especially has been linked to a slight increase in your body’s ability to burn extra calories. Essentially, your body needs to work to regulate the temperature of the water so that it matches your body’s core temperature. If you drink plenty of water throughout the day, and especially right before meals, this can help shave off a few more calories.
  4. Calcium – Some studies have found evidence showing that people who aren’t getting enough calcium in their diet have slower metabolisms. That’s why it’s important to make sure you’re getting enough of this essential nutrient. Try more green leafy vegetables, including spring greens, cabbage, swede, rocket, watercress, kale, broccoli and parsley.
  5. Vitamin D – for another small boost in your calorie burning, try foods that are rich in vitamin D. One natural sources of Vitamin D are fatty fish (like tuna, mackerel, and wild salmon–which we favor the most as it is so rich in Omega 3 fatty acids as well ). Other great natural sources of Vit D include orange juice, and organic beef liver and organic egg yolks.  Vitamin D helps keep your muscles strong and healthy, which is a key factor in burning calories more efficiently. It has also been shown to help keep your immune system at its peak, which may prevent or reduce your frequency of getting sick, and has even been shown to be effective in fighting depression.
  6. Grilled Organic Chicken – Eating plenty of protein has also been shown to help keep your metabolism working at its best. Protein is able to fuel your muscle fibers and contributes to the amount of lean mass you have. With more lean mass as part of your body’s composition, you are able to maximize your calorie burning. Protein sources like skinless grilled chicken breast are a great way to feel satisfied without adding too many calories to your plate.
  7. Spinach – it’s also important to make sure you get enough iron in your diet in order to help your muscles be more efficient. Iron contributes to the delivery of oxygen to your muscles. This process is essential if you want to burn fat when you’re cutting back on your calories. One of the tastiest sources of iron is spinach. A mixed salad that swaps spinach for lettuce can be an easy way to add this nutrient to your plate.

Vision Board – free download!

 Uh oh….I’ve been thinking… 🙂

Oh gosh. I can’t even tell you how THRILLED I am to be able to post again. We had a crazy glitch with our site and it wouldn’t let us post. Not even once, for 3 whole weeks!

I’ve decided that maybe we need to learn PATIENCE?!! Lol, between you and me, I think it just may be true. And I’m actually really grateful for that. AND that I was cut off from posting for a while. No, not for the obvious reasons you might be thinking, like getting some time off or something crazy fun, but in fact, quite the opposite, as it’s given me time to really contemplate what we need to talk about.

And maybe missing New Years with you was actually the perfect time to miss. As I saw the whole world posting about New Years Resolutions, I realized how this is something we can do on an ongoing basis, and practically eliminate a chance for failure. I’ve thought about how to not just encourage you to set those goals, but how to find the ones that will best define YOU, so you can have a positive experience all the way around.

As we’ve been on our own journey, we’ve come to really understand that it’s not touching the heart, but changing the heart that will ultimately have the greatest impact on our health and well being.  It’s like completely re-setting that inner compass and making changes flow almost subconsciously rather than fighting ourselves to make things happen.

Whether you are hoping to lose weight, get more fit, eat more healthy, get ripped, become more grateful, or whatever it is, just get it on your Vision Board asap.

Once upon a time, I wasn’t so sure about making a vision board…but now, I’m convinced they are incredible.

I admit it, I had actually heard that I should make a Vision Board before, but had no interest. Yikes, did I really just say that?! Ok, yeah, I really had zero interest.

And it wasn’t until I worked on a TV Pilot that I actually finally got the vision.

One of the show’s Hosts was a business woman, who had sold her first business for $500,000,000.00. Yes, this is that part where you can gulp really big. I did.

So I worked with her for a few days in the studio, then again, at her home (I guess you could call it that) which was about as breathtaking and enormous as it could possibly be. And that’s just the description of her closet, jk, ok, well maybe kinda, lol.

This woman told me how, as a young mother she ended up divorced, with very little money. Her dad had taught her to make vision boards, and had turned her into a firm believer. He also told her to figure out how to support herself, so she put it on her VB.

Before long, she set up a business, then grew it every day. She put goal after goal on her VB, and met those goals in spite of every obstacle along the way.

In time, she was able to sell her business, and now runs a business that helps startups, and one of the 1st things she teaches those business owners is to make VB’s.

She also said that every item she had ever placed on her vision board materialized. She said there was only one item still on her board, but she knew it would materialize.

And you know what it was? It was a Jet. Lol. Yep, a real, live Jet. 🙂

By now, she very likely has her jet, but if not, I have no doubt that she will have it soon.

She was passionate about the power those boards have.

But even more than the message she shared of her vision board, I was deeply touched by how quickly she turned all of her thanks to God, who had always carried her, every step of the way. That was awesome, and I was very inspired to say the least.

So I’ve made my own, and they are awesome tools. That’s why I want to share this with you.

As you can see, on my board above, I want to make other’s smile every day, to do humanitarian missions, to replace our very ancient cars with something more reliable, to go on a trip to Disneyland with the entire family, to go on a cruise with my husband, to feed my spirit daily, and to exercise daily.

We recommend that you download it, pray about what you’re going to place on it, and fill it with what inspires you. It can be things, places you’d like to go, things you’d like to do, but hopefully it will include some behavioral changes you want to embrace as well, as that’s where the greatest successes start to happen.

I wasn’t even planning to get on a scale, since I don’t want the rush (good or bad) that it would give and I really don’t want this to be about vanity. But since I’m reporting to you, and I said that I would, here goes….. this week I lost 4 pounds. So cool, cool, awesome, but I really want to say I feel good–because my body is feeling better. Those 4 pounds are helping me to see the power in taking care of myself right, which is really cool.

dear diary…My Healthy Diet – Backwards :(… the grande finale

Okay, I admit it. I AM a wimp, ugh.  But  this experience definitely taught me some important things. In case you’re just seeing this post, it’s the end of a 3 post series, all called, “My Healthy Diet Backwards.” You’ll want to read those in order to understand why in the world I would tackle this task.

On Wednesday night, I was out running around and saw a Kneaders Restaurant. I think the only thing I’ve ever eaten there, were the salads, which I really like. But I was under orders to eat a lot of gluten, so my eyes drifted over to the unfamiliar sandwich menu.

One thing that stood out to me was a turkey avocado croissant. I love anything avocado, and I’ll bet it’s been over 20 years since I’ve eaten a croissant. I had written them off years ago, because of the high buttery fat content. But as I sat there, I decided to eat something that I used to love, and sooo, that croissant would be it. It included a little salad of dark greens and I decided to also add a package of chips (for nightshades) and a water.

I was really hungry and devoured the entire meal. It actually seemed quite light, and tasted really good. I didn’t feel that heavy, bloating immediately, and thought maybe I would breeze right through this without any bad after effects.

But my body didn’t feel quite the same way about that meal. By morning, I ached everywhere. The bloat was back, and after another restless night, I really didn’t even want to get out of bed. But I finally did.

The last thing I wanted to do was eat. So I got some work done and got dressed. When I sat in front of the mirror to spackle on my face, I was surprised at how much more pale my skin looked. I added more makeup than usual, just to get some color back into my face. My skin had no glow, it was just pale and pasty.

I ended up making breakfast about lunchtime. As I prepared my food, I thought about what a glorious day it was–because this madness would all be over within 24 hours, and I could hardly wait.

I shredded and soaked a potato, then baked it in olive oil.  When my hash browns were almost ready, I cooked up 2 hormone/antibiotic free eggs, and a piece of white toast, which I slathered in extra virgin olive oil.

I snatched a bottle of my husband’s catsup from the fridge and immediately looked at the ingredients. I had a feeling it wouldn’t be good, and it wasn’t. The main ingredient was high fructose corn syrup, and it was surrounded by a long list of other chemical ingredients. There was no way I’d eat that. So I threw his catsup away, (he’ll never know 🙂 and I grabbed my little blender and within a few minutes had a totally natural, healthy, lacto fermented catsup that was so much more delicious anyway.

I knew I needed some fresh milk, and had purposely waited until the last day to hit it very hard. Luckily my hubby buys only hormone free, organic milk, so I didn’t have to throw out his milk too, lol. 🙂 The fun truth is that he’s slowly coming around to my way of eating, one huge baby step at a time. But as he’s been making a lot of dietary changes, he’s become excited about how easy it has finally become to lose weight, and how much better the new improvements to his diet are making him feel.

I took the milk and within about 3 minutes whipped up some delicious, homemade cacao milk…an easy alternative to chocolate milk, but loaded with antioxidants and zero chemicals-yay! mmmm

I ate everything, and even in spite of my healthy catsup and cacao milk, I still felt that heaviness, heartburn, and bloat hit right away. Ohh ugh.

My hubby came home after work and was eager to head downtown to a local pizza restaurant that was having a 2 for 1 deal.  It would fortunately be my last meal before I would be getting my life back. It sounded fine, so we headed downtown for pizza and salads.

By the end of the meal, I knew I needed to walk a while. So my hubby and I walked all over downtown before heading back to our car. The walk was nice–the air was fresh, but it didn’t even begin to take away the yuckiness that I felt.

And for the final night, I tossed and turned and my stomach churned fiercely all night long. My body was declaring that it was done, and so was I.

Morning came and I drank some lacto-fermented juice, a piece of toast, and headed up to my doctor’s office. They drew a bunch of blood and I felt like my life was changed in a twinkling. Well not exactly, but I was thrilled to know that I finally had my life back. The drive home was pure happiness for me.

Oh, and I almost forgot a kind of very important thing. I never get on scales anymore, because with our diet, we don’t count calories at all, because the thing that counts is getting lots of nutrients. It’s actually the perfect diet for an artist that avoids math at all costs. j/k 🙂 So another really crazy thing is that they weighed me at the doctors office, before each visit and I actually gained almost 5 pounds from the beginning to the end of that backwards diet.

As hard as this was, and as much pain as I’ve felt all week, I’m grateful for the realizations I’ve had from this experience. It was difficult, and something I don’t want to relive again, and doubt that I ever will.

To anyone who fears it’s too hard to make healthy dietary changes, I can seriously say that I wish I could give you the experience I just lived through. Not because I’m a mean, bitter person, but because I know you would find a commitment to make the changes without ever looking back.

I’m so grateful to be able to eat healthy foods, free of chemicals, and loaded with nutrients again, and look so forward to feeling better with every bite once more. My experience ended on Friday morning. It’s now Monday, and I’ve been eating a pure, detoxifying diet, loaded with greens, ever since. I’ve been gradually feeling more and more like myself, but can tell there are still some after effects from last week’s diet. My heartburn is completely gone again, the bloating is gone, and I’m beginning to feel less and less pain with each new morning. I know that I’ll get back to where I was before again, and for that, am truly grateful.

I love that I now have no desire to ever look back. I know that I’m not missing out on a thing. No matter how amazing tastes, the after effects are just not worth it. My healthy diet, backwards, is over! Life is great, and knowledge is power. As a wise man once said,

It’s officially day 2 of this diet that some people might think would be “freedom”.  Wow, and after day 2 I can already say that this is nothing like the freedom I’ve become used to. Just to update anyone who may have missed my post from yesterday…my doctor wants to do some food allergy testing on me to see if we can get my lungs recharged from the effects of this years smoggy inversions. She said in order to get accurate results, I needed to eat foods I’ve avoided for 5 years. That includes nightshades, dairy, and gluten. Technically it should include soy and sugar too I guess, but I refuse to touch either of the latter two.  I wasn’t excited about the assignment to eat my old diet again, and thought I’d share. So here goes..

DAY 2:

It’s so crazy how lethargic I feel.  I want to exercise because I know it will help, but I feel too tired, bloated, and uncomfortable.

Healthy Diet


Last night we went to Subway. I thought at least I could fill a sandwich with a lot of veggies to hopefully help me feel more alive again. This might surprise some viewers, but I chose the white bread instead of the “wheat.” Any guesses why???

We were working on a movie in a rural area several years ago and they brought us Subway sandwiches.  We wondered if the wheat was truly better than the white (which it should be) but when we looked up the ingredients, we found that Subway’s wheat is basically white–it’s a “multi-grain” not whole wheat, and usually multi grain’s are mainly enriched white flour (which is counted as a “grain”) The thing that concerned us the most, was that it contained caramel color, to enhance it and make it look more like wheat.  That’s a big concern to us, as caramel color is believed to be carcinogenic. So most of the time, for gluten eaters, we’d say stay with the wheat. But in Subway’s case, our choice would be white if we have to eat their bread.

I hate to admit this, but I also did something really dumb.  I decided to get the meatball sub, since I used to love those sandwiches years ago, and will hopefully never eat gluten again. I knew it would include nightshades, and cheese besides. So for all the right reasons I ordered that meatball sandwich. Not good.

Anyway, as I sat there eating it, I hoped all of the veggies on it would help me to feel that wonderful sense of energy with every bite that I’m used to feeling, but it really didn’t.  I just felt bloated. I had half of the sandwich and a cup of water and called it good.  

Needless to say,  I left that restaurant really regretting that decision.  I’m not a beef eater at all, and beef is so hard to digest. Even though it tasted pretty good, the after effects were in no way worth it. By now, my heartburn was in full vengeance, and burning all the way up my throat. Again, I knew yoga was out. 🙁

And that was just the beginning.  Sleep wasn’t much of an option last night. My stomach literally churned and quaked all night long. I tossed and turned, and it seemed to get even madder at me. So I laid awake, waiting for the night to end.


Healthy Diet

This morning I just wanted to feel better. My hands were sore and swollen with inflammation, my back and neck stiff and sore. I glared at the loaf of bread on my counter and wished I had the power to make it vanish. But I knew I needed to try to get some in my system. So I plopped one piece into the toaster and pulled out the peanut butter. As the toast heated, I filled my blender with a load of greens and some lime and stevia and whipped up a huge all-vegetable except lime, green smoothie. I was ready for combat. I decided as long as I have to eat this garbage, I’ll eat in a way that my body can flush it through as quickly as possible.  For the first time in a couple of days, I felt better with every gulp.  Seriously. It is so amazing how magical it feels to fuel your body with what it needs. 

I felt so good, so energetic, and clear headed for the next few hours–it was awesome! Then came lunch.


Healthy Diet

We met up at Zupas for lunch. I haven’t had much dairy, which I’m really afraid of, but I know I need to have it in my system for accurate readings on the allergy testing. So I got a creamy mushroom soup and some kind of panini sandwich. They tasted good, but there truly is nothing greater than eating and feeling a surge of energy, and mental clarity with every bite. These foods just left me feeling bloated, tired, and sapped of energy.  We run into so many people who can’t seem to let go of eating the traditional SAD diet because “it’s too hard” to transition. But I wish so bad I could give them a chance to feel how much better it feels to eat healthy–if they could have that, they’d never turn back to the diet that destroys our health.

After that, we came home, and I made up the chocolate banana split ice cream in our Desserts Cookbook for me and the boys.  They love it, and so do I, so we all lapped it down. 

I’m a little late getting this out today, and I have no idea what I’ll have for dinner. I’ll fill you in tomorrow, and I promise that whatever I eat will not contain beef–ugh.  Those meatballs were probably the end of my beef eating for life, and I’m ok with that!
