DIY Laundry Soap + DIY Fabric Fresheners

Ok, maybe I’m just a sucker for great deals and saving money, or maybe I’m just a sucker, lol. But whether I am or not, I love sharing what we do to make our lives better, and think this post will make yours better too!

And so, are you ready for a couple of easy recipe + ideas for DIY Laundry Soap + DIY Fabric Fresheners? K, but first, please let us know how much you love them too!

DIY Laundry Soap + DIY Fabric Fresheners

Comment below…please! 🙂

Before I start, did you also know that fragrance is one of the most toxic chemicals in the products we use? Yeah, but it makes our laundry smell so fresh..but the other concern is how many people are walking around with dermatitis, eczema, and allergies who might be quickly relieved by making some simple and inexpensive switches.

I‘ve done this DIY detergent before (like years ago) but have been spoiled with buying the natural stuff instead of making it…  So back to brewing it myself I go!

Disclaimer! I am so glad I forced myself to make this, forgot how AWESOME it is, my whites are whiter than ever and it feels great to be efficient!

DIY Laundry Soap + DIY Fabric Fresheners

DIY LAUNDRY SOAP
1 bar Fels naptha soap (ground up or graded)
1c washing soda
1/2c borax
Organic Essential oils for scent (optional)
Fill a 5 gallon clean bucket with 3 gallons warm water add washing soda, borax and essential oil to bucket and stir.
Separately Boil Fels naptha soap in 4 c water. Once nearly dissolved pour mixture into bucket and mix well!

Cover and set aside for 24 hrs. Don’t stir after the 24hrs, the detergent should “gel” up

HOW MUCH TO USE:
When washing I use 3/4-1 cup of the solution.

DIY FABRIC FRESHENERS

Here’s my little extra tip:
Those of you that like scent, can add the organic essential oils in the detergent like above OR for even more….here’s my secret tip, which is MUCH better than using traditional dryer sheets filled with unhealthy fragrances that can irritate the skin and be an overload. So I take a clean cotton hanky and add 15-20 drops of organic essential oil. I toss it in right before drying the clothes and voila! The whole house smells amazing, but the clothes smell amazingly fresh too!! Here are three of my faves:

  • Organic Lavender – for bedding
  • Organic Sweet Orange – for a fresh invigoration
  • Organic Peppermint – for clothing I need to stay awake in (work & workout clothes)
  • Let us know YOUR faves!

NOTE: Make SURE that the essential oils you use are completely ORGANIC. If you’d like to know why, please head over to our post, Are Essential Oils Safe?

Here’s a line that we LOVE and have set up an affiliation with::

Simple DIY Tricks for Restoring Jewelry

We’re all about repurposed and recycled jewelry, and why wouldn’t we be? But what if it stinks like that old attic smell? In this post, we’ve got some simple DIY tricks for renewing that old jewelry, and even getting rid of that stink–yay! 🙂

This post came about because the other day I was at a Boutique and ran across a booth full of old jewelry. I must have had the “look” because the girl at the booth announced that every piece was just $3. Immediately I had to touch it, and as I felt the metals and jewels, I knew they were worth much more than the price she had set.

She continued, “We bought a storage unit at an action and it was loaded with all of this jewelry.” I was intrigued, “so I’m just selling it to get rid of it.”

Wow. Some people get all the luck, lol.

But I’m happy for her and also happy for me, because that $3 price went a very long way! As I draped 17 pieces of very cool jewelry onto one arm, I started to smell that old stinky metal smell. If I didn’t know it was an easy fix, I may have set down every one of those pieces and move on. But luckily I knew, and that’s when I realized I needed to share what I knew with you.

I went home and here is what I did:

Mix the following together:

INGREDIENTS

INSTRUCTIONS

Pour ingredients into a pitcher and stir.

  1. Place jewelry into a glass bowl or metal pan, then pour the mixture over the jewelry, making sure to saturate each peice.
  2. Allow to sit overnight or at least 12 hours.
  3. Remove from the liquid mixture and place jewelry pieces onto a dry towel.
  4. Allow to dry completely.
  5. Enjoy your fresh new jewelry!

Viola!! That’s all there is to it. I wish I would’ve taken a before and after because it was much more sparkly and bright after the cleaning. But had you seen it before, it was pretty dingy and dull, but luckily I could see a glimmer of hope.

So that’s all there is to it.

Many of the pieces I’ve done this with have been costume jewelry, and I haven’t had any problems with it at all. If you have something you’re afraid could get ruined, do some research before taking the plunge. But from my experience it has brought new life back to something old and forgotten, and that’s been really fun!

Let us know how it works for you! Comment below, we love hearing from you!

DIY Natural Dishwashing Soap Recipe

Okay, time for a little confession.  We’d like to say we have always been eco-conscious and cared about the environment and get all kinds of the kudos that would be deserving.  But, umm, that wasn’t our first motivation. It wasn’t even our second either.  And the thought of making our own DIY Natural Dishwashing Soap would have seemed hilarious to us way back when.

But back to the whole “going eco”, we did it because we started to see the impact it had on the body and our overall health and well-being.  But by the time we finally came full circle, it made perfect sense to take care of this beautiful planet that takes care of us.  So now I guess you could say, we are full on hippies, but it’s actually a lot of fun.  We get a thrill as we figure out new recipes and ways to replace the things we used to rely on someone else to make for us.  Plus, it’s empowering to know exactly what’s in the products we are now using, because we made them ourselves!

Ready to get started on your DIY Natural Dishwashing Soap?  Here goes:

SHOPPING LIST:

NOTE: Essential oils are a huge marketing ploy right now, and that is because they are working great for so many people. But many of them aren’t pure, and we believe could be potentially dangerous. Many manufacturers also use synthetic versions, which are chemically engineered and should be avoided altogether. But because they are so loosely regulated, many on the market get out there and appear to be completely organic. It’s impossible to tell, and at any moment a manufacturer using pure grade oils can change to synthetic to greatly increase their profit margin. So because of that, we do a lot of investigating into products before recommending them. The links we’ve placed on this post are to oils we believe to be the best options at the moment.

Just before using, be sure to shake or roll bottle.

Let us know how you love this recipe and any more you’d like for us to cook up for you 🙂  You guys are the best, please share your comments below, we dare you! LOL!! Actually, we love hearing from you  ALWAYS!!

Natural DIY Air Fresheners

Natural DIY Air Fresheners

I used to love it when actors would step into our makeup trailer and immediately comment on how wonderful it smelt.  I would look proudly at my newest little air freshener that I had just purchased thinking what a wonderful investment it had been.

Or was it?

When I first learned that fragrance could be highly toxic, I seriously didn’t want to believe it.   I loved fragrance.  So at first I denied it, then as time went by, I became curious as I started to connect my headaches and foggy thinking moments to times I was surrounded by fragrance.  I reluctantly started doing my homework and learned much more than I wanted to.  I found reports and studies that linked fragrance to neurotoxicity, cancer, and endocrine disruption.

Many fragrances contain petroleum bi-products, and even phthalates, which are carcinogenic endocrine disruptors.  Often, a single perfume can contain hundreds of ingredients, resulting in chemical toxicity, central nervous system disorders, birth defects, headaches, dizziness, nausea, fainting, respiratory issues and the list goes on and on.

So yes it was a sad realization, but before long and after much searching, I realized pure essential oils were a much better option and even could be therapeutic.  However, some essential oils themselves may contain synthetic ingredients, so it’s important to make sure to only use 100% Pure Therapeutic grade essential oils.

Essential oils can enhance mood, aid fatigue, stress and depression.  Even though they are typically much safer than fragrances or perfumes, pure grade oils are potent and should be used carefully and avoided during pregnancy.  Most oils should not be ingested.

Instead of trying to mask odors, try to eliminate them altogether.

Some simple things that can be done include:

  • cleaning the refrigerator often, including the tray and racks with a mild castile soap and baking soda.
  • Also, leaving a box of baking soda open, in the fridge will help.
  • Cleaning out the garbage cans in the same way can help eliminate household odors.

To amp up the good scents, here are some simple fixes:

  • Placing a drop of essential oil on a warming plate can help.
  • In the bathroom, dropping essential oil onto the cardboard roll that the toilet paper rolls on will help refresh the clean scent of the oil.
  • Placing a drop of your favorite oil onto your vacuum bag fills the room with a nice fresh scent as well.
